A Notice to Airmen issued by Airservices Australia to alert pilots to a hazard or change not yet reflected on published charts.
A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) in Australia is a time-critical notice issued by Airservices Australia containing information essential to flight safety that is not yet reflected on published charts or in the AIP (Aeronautical Information Publication) — a runway closure, an unserviceable navigation aid, a temporary obstacle, or airspace restricted for an event, for example.
NOTAMs are retrieved through the NAIPS (National Aeronautical Information Processing System) briefing service, which is also the source for ARFORs, TAFs, and other pre-flight information required for a full weather and NOTAM briefing.
Checking NOTAMs relevant to the intended route and destination is a mandatory part of pre-flight planning under CASR, and CASA air law and operations exams expect a candidate to know both what a NOTAM covers and where an Australian pilot is required to obtain one.
